What usually gets said
“We need £400k to replace the data platform. The current one is end-of-life, pipelines are failing weekly, and it can’t support our AI roadmap.”
Accurate. Urgent. Easy to defer to next year.
TRAINING FOR DATA TEAMS
Business skills for data teams, built on the Four Bearings.
Most data professionals are trained in the technical work and very little else. Business Fluency teaches the rest: how the business makes money, how to make a case that gets funded, how to influence people you don’t manage, and how to run the work so it gets used.
WHY IT MATTERS

You’ve invested in data, platforms and AI. The return depends on whether the people doing the work can operate as part of the business, not just as a service.
Most data people have never been taught how. Nobody explains how the business makes money, how to build an investment case, or how to bring sceptical stakeholders along. So they stay on the edge of decisions they should be shaping. The cost shows up in familiar places: good work that never gets adopted, investment cases that don’t land, and talented people who stall or leave.
It’s rarely about individuals alone. How data teams and the business work together, how they handle friction, and how decisions get made shape the outcome as much as anyone’s skills.
Business Fluency works on both.
BUSINESS FLUENCY IN PRACTICE
The data doesn’t change. How it lands with the board does.
What usually gets said
“We need £400k to replace the data platform. The current one is end-of-life, pipelines are failing weekly, and it can’t support our AI roadmap.”
Accurate. Urgent. Easy to defer to next year.
What gets funded
“Pricing decisions take three weeks because the data behind them isn’t trusted. Fixing that lets the commercial team reprice twice as often, worth around £1.2m a year. It needs £400k, with returns inside two quarters.”
Same money. Framed as a business decision, not an IT cost.

THE PROGRAMME
Four modules, one for each bearing. Each combines a practical workshop with work between sessions on your team’s real projects, so people use what they learn straight away rather than filing it.

The programme typically runs over three to four months. Where it helps, leaders taking part can add 1:1 coaching alongside it.
FOR YOUR TEAM
Heads of data, managers and team leads, and the analysts, engineers and scientists who work most closely with the business. It works best with a cohort from the same organisation, learning on their own work together.
BUILT AROUND YOU
There’s no off-the-shelf version. Before we start, we agree what your team needs most, and shape the content, examples and pace around your organisation.
You don’t have to take the full programme. Other options include:
Single modules. Focus on the bearing that matters most right now, such as investment cases or stakeholder influence.
Workshops. Half or full days built around a live piece of work, so the team leaves having moved something real forward.
Talks. For offsites, leadership days and internal conferences. Short, practical and grounded in your context.
MY EXPERIENCE
Business skills can be taught. They stick best when they’re taught by someone who has used them in the same seat. I’ve spent nearly 25 years building and leading data functions, making the investment cases, sitting in the board meetings and bringing the business along. Business Fluency is built from that experience, and from what I’ve seen work across many organisations since.

Thirty minutes to talk about your team, what you need them to be able to do, and which format fits.
